Another year, another disappointing finish from the boys in blue and white. We’ve grown to expect this, sadly, and yet fans still insisted that these guys could and would get it done. When the dust settled on this horrendous game 7 against Florida, however, the jerseys couldn’t be tossed fast enough. Auston Matthews and his band of merry men including the likes of Mitch “Muskoka” Marner and John Tavares once again proved they simply don’t have what it takes to win when it matters the most.

Toronto is the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL. Every year we get to hear about all of their past accomplishments, how this is the year, no one is going to stop Auston Matthews. If doing great in the regular season was all that mattered then sure, Toronto is elite. Matthews is top tier. After game 82? That’s when the real Leafs come out to play. They may as well be related to the grinch because there’s no heart detected for miles. No clutch genes in their bodies. They’re simply too soft for playoff hockey. Craig Berube isn’t a miracle worker, he can’t turn Matthews into something he isn’t. They’re just not fierce competitors…

Brendan Shanahan leaving isn’t going to solve everything overnight. They don’t have a first round pick this year or next, and the prospect cupboard is very bare. The core 4 is dead, and Toronto should be looking long and hard at creating a new identity and leaving the past failures behind. Matthew Knies and Joseph Wall both need new contracts. Stolarz and his cap hit should be moved. John Tavares should be long gone, and honestly they shouldn’t be spending 12+ on Marner either. There’s a lot of questions in Leaf land this summer, with the possibility this team may not even make the playoffs. Don’t get me wrong, as a true Canadian I want to see them succeed. I just don’t believe in this group anymore and neither should you. Only one thing is for sure, come October, we know we will hear about those past Cups.
